How to Care for Your One-of-a-Kind Rug

How to Care for Your One-of-a-Kind Rug

How to Spot Clean Your One-of-a-Kind Rug

General rule: Act quickly and blot, never scrub. Scrubbing can damage delicate fibers and push stains deeper into the rug

For non-oily, organic spills (e.g., wine, juice, coffee):

  • Blot excess liquid with a clean paper towel or cloth

  • Gently blot the area with a damp cloth to dilute the stain

  • Repeat until the stain lifts

  • For stubborn stains, repeat the process with a small amount of mild, clear dish soap

For oily or dense spills (e.g., sauces, lotions):

  • Carefully scoop any residue from the surface without rubbing it into the fibers

  • Gently blot and rinse the area using a small amount of mild, clear dish soap

  • Repeat as needed until the stain improves

For significant or chemical-based spills:

  • If the spill contains harsh substances or deeply saturates the rug, seek professional hand-washing as soon as possible.

For deeply saturated or richly colored vintage rugs:

  • Spot clean the rug in an area that can be thoroughly rinsed, as some dyes may release or bleed when exposed to moisture

Avoid

  • Citrus-based soaps, which may bleach fibers

  • Aggressive scrubbing, which can damage fibers

How Often Should You Vacuum Your Rug?

Once or twice a month is typically enough, cadence depends on foot traffic volume

Avoid

  • Vacuums with rotating beater bars, as they can pull fibers and increase shedding

    • Use a non-rotary vacuum or suction attachment only

Fiber Rug Care

  • Rotate your rug periodically for even wear

  • Use a rug pad to absorb impact and reduce fiber damage

  • Once a year, hang it in the sun for a few hours, flip midway through to clean both sides

    • This natural cleaning method helps sanitize and deodorize the wool

  • Light matting and signs of fiber or thread breakage are expected over time

    • For high traffic areas, these effects may occur more quickly and easily

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I steam clean my one-of-a-kind rug?

No. Steam cleaners, carpet cleaning machines, and extraction cleaners (such as portable carpet cleaners) can damage fibers, dyes, and the rug's foundation.

For spills, follow the spot-cleaning instructions in your care guide. For deep cleaning, we recommend professional hand-washing by an experienced rug cleaner every 3–5 years.
